Tinnitus can lead to hearing loss. What can be done.
We have recently had a bunch of people coming in with tinnitus, and I didn’t realize the prevalence of tinnitus in the United States till I Googled it, and over 50 million Americans are suffering with tinnitus right now. Over 20 million have chronic tinnitus creating hearing loss. That is a really big problem in the United States.
Fortunately, Upper Cervical Chiropractic has had great results helping people with tinnitus. And you’re probably thinking, well how does chiropractic have anything to do with tinnitus or ringing in the ear? Well, there’s a nerve that comes off of the ear that goes and sends messages to the brain. It’s called the vestibulocochlear nerve. It has two branches, vestibular, which is your balance and cochlear, which is your hearing. And what we have found is if one of the top bones in the neck gets out of align, the message between the ear and the brain can get altered or interfered with, creating the sounds of tinnitus. Sometimes it can also even affect the vestibular part of the nerve, and create altered balance or vertigo.
When the nerve leaves the ear. There’s nothing wrong with the ear. In most cases of tinnitus when they check the ear, they see the ears okay. But somehow, between the ear and the brain, the message gets altered to create the constant ringing sounds that you hear, that your brain interprets. Well, if the message goes unimpeded from the ear to the brain, then normal message should arrive, thus no ringing, no altered sensations, no balance issues, no hearing loss. But if, kind of like stepping on a garden hose, the message gets interfered with there’s only one place that can happen, and that’s at the top of the neck, because that nerve doesn’t go straight to the brain. It goes to the brain stem, which comes down through the top two bones. Then from the brain stem, it goes to the brain, where that message is interpreted.
So, if there’s a bone out of align at the top of the neck, like stepping on a garden hose, it alters the message from the ear before it gets to the brain. So, now the brain is interpreting something different from what the ear was sending it. Thus creates the symptoms of tinnitus, vertigo, loss of hearing. So, if you have tinnitus, I think it would be a really good idea to find out what could possibly be causing it. If you have an upper cervical problem that could be creating your tinnitus.
Now let me make you very aware that you don’t have to have neck pain, or headaches, or anything like that to have a bone out of align. See, the brain stem doesn’t have any pain perception. So, you could have a bone out of align in your neck for years without necessarily having neck pain. But, it could be interfering with the messages anywhere from your body to your brain, or your brain to your body. In this particular case, it could be creating the tinnitus.
