Today I want to talk to you about trigeminal neuralgia. If you've never heard of trigeminal neuralgia, consider yourself lucky. If you have, you also probably know it's often referred to as the suicide disease, because they say it is the worst pain known to man. It’s a severe pain in the face. There's three branches of the trigeminal nerve, one goes above the forehead, one across the cheek, and one right along the chin. And they say it's comparable to either having an ice pick stabbing you in the face, or chewing on aluminum foil, if you ever experienced that.
So they call it the suicide disease, because so many people say they can't deal with the pain. It's so excruciating that they actually take their own life. So if you've never heard of trigeminal neuralgia, consider yourself lucky, but unfortunately, there's thousands of people across the United States, actually all over the world, that suffer daily with this trigeminal neuralgia. We have people come to our office in Charlotte, North Carolina quite literally from all over the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, for help for trigeminal neuralgia. We've actually been very, very successful being able to help people.
So one of the reasons I wanted to create this was to try to create more awareness, because it seems like when you go on the trigeminal neuralgia support groups, when you go on the Facebook pages and stuff, the people are more about how do you live with trigeminal neuralgia than how do you actually get well from it. And I've even been attacked for even suggesting that there was actually help. One of the things I want you to realize is that trigeminal neuralgia does not come from a drug deficiency, or too many body parts.
What that means is there is no drug that can fix trigeminal neuralgia, because the cause is not a lack of medication that's causing the pain. Medication, at best, rarely, but sometimes can actually mask the pain a little bit, but it doesn't actually correct the cause. And surgery should always be an absolute last option. I've had multiple patients who have had Gamma Knives and other surgeries for TN that have not gotten any help whatsoever and actually, even in some cases, made them a little worse.
So let's think about this, and tell me if this doesn't make sense. The trigeminal nerve is a sensory nerve that actually senses what's going on in the face and sends messages to the brain telling the brain exactly what's going on, hot, cold, touch. Well, so what's happening is that somehow or another, there's nothing wrong with the face, but the brain is sensing pain on one or multiple branches of that trigeminal nerve, that there is pain there, when actually there's nothing there creating the pain.
So, what's happening is somewhere between your face and the messages that get to the brain, the message is somehow getting distorted telling the brain that there's a sensation of pain. Well, what we have found, as an upper cervical chiropractor, is we have found that pretty much every TN patient I've had is that there's a misalignment in one of the top two bones in the neck. And that's where the nerve goes into the brainstem, at the top of the neck, that there's a misalignment there that could be interfering with the messages between the face and the brain, so that it gives the brain an altered sensation that creates the pain.
So what we have found is if we can take three dimensional x-rays and we can see exactly how the top two bones are positioned, one of 274 possible ways they can malposition, we can find that. And if we can take that pressure off the brainstem by correctly positioning the bone where it should be and removing the interference ... At our office we actually have computerized equipment to tell us when the pressure's there and, before you leave, make sure the pressure's gone.
If we can remove the pressure on the brainstem, what that does is it now normalizes the messages between the face to the brain. Meaning that now there's no altered sensation, no pain sensation that goes to the brain, so the brain now is actually getting the correct message, which is that there's nothing going on in the face. So the TN symptoms, the facial pain, starts to disappear. As crazy as that sounds, there has to be a cause. There has to be a reason why you have pain in your face when there's nothing wrong with the face.
And the only possible explanation is something's interfering, something's altered the message from the face to the brain. What we have found is -- every case that I've had, and I've had well over a hundred -- that the message is interfered with at the top of the neck, literally the brainstem area, and we can go in, and we can correct and remove the interference to the message. The message now gets to the brain unimpeded, unaltered and it's normal. So you get the sensation of normalcy back again in the face.
