Asthma has become the most common and most costly healthcare condition in United States. More than 17 million Americans have asthma in the United States, and that's costing our country over $13 billion a year.
Over 10 million class days have been missed from students with asthma because they couldn't make it to school. Over 5,000 people every year are dying as a result of asthma, and that's one of the few conditions that that death rate is actually going up every single year.
Now, the traditional medical approach obviously isn't working because the numbers are getting worse. We're spending more money, and people are dying more frequently. Now, let's look at, first of all, the causes of asthma, where it could possibly come from, and then what's the best way to try to fix it, correct it? What happens in the case with asthma is when you breathe in, your air goes through your nose, your mouth, down your trachea.
Then it branches off into what are called bronchial tubes that go into the lungs. When you need more air, then your bronchial tubes need to open up more to allow more passage of air through there. When they don't open, when they don't dilate enough to allow the proper amount of air to the lungs, you don't get the proper oxygen.
A lack of oxygen can affect you in a lot of different ways, but most importantly, the brain. What causes the bronchioles to open up or to close? It's the nervous system, more specifically, the respiratory center, which resides in the heart of the brainstem. Now, the brainstem comes out of your head down to the bottom of the second two bones and then from there down is the spinal cord.
The brainstem is housed within the top two bones in the neck and in the brainstem is the respiratory center. That's the center that sends the messages to the lungs or the bronchial tubes telling them to open up, dilate, or constrict, allowing more or less airflow. Now, if that process doesn't work the way it's intended, then somewhere between the message from the brain and the respiratory center and the lungs, the message must be getting altered, or else it would work the way it's intended.
Well, the medical approach is to go in and just take a medication or take an inhaler or something that goes straight into the lung and stimulate those nerves to open up or close, as you need it, as you feel you need it. What happens if you don't have the medication, or what happens if it doesn't get there in time, or what happens if your body just becomes immune to it and over time it just quits working?
Obviously, you have a trouble right? So what we have found at the Upper Cervical Spine Center is that at the brainstem, where that respiratory center is housed, if one of the top bones in the neck gets out of align there, it can actually interfere with the messages between the brain and the lungs or the bronchial tubes so that they don't get the proper message telling them to open up or dilate as they're supposed to, so you don't get proper air flow. Matter of fact, there's only place in the entire body that this can happen, and that's at the top of the neck.
We've helped hundreds, I don't know, maybe thousands of adults and children with asthma over the years by finding the problem, the cause at the brainstem and removing the interference there, which then allows the message to get to the lungs the way they're intended and react the way they're supposed to, constricting or dilating, allowing proper air flow.
There's research that shows that up to 100% response as a result of upper cervical care. I think in our office, it's probably been about 100%.
